Hyper CrossFIT Appoints New Level 1 Coach: Kim Kryscnski

FIT celebrates Burlington Township’s own Kim Kryscnski, a dedicated and devoted CrossFit athlete and high school history teacher, on her recent achievement of obtaining her Level 1 CrossFit trainer certification and new member of Team FIT at the rank of Assistant CrossFit Coach. An educator by both passion and profession, Kim teaches high school history by day and will be teaching CrossFit classes by night, coaching  a few classes per week at Hyper CrossFIT, mainly during the evening. Her natural inclination to instruct and inspire allows Kim to share her vast knowledge and benefits of the CrossFit model with every member of the FIT family.

Coach Kim has demonstrated a lifetime of success as an award-winning gymnast and pole vaulter and generally avid sports enthusiast. A competitive athlete for the majority of her life, Kim submits she could never find her “true self” in a regular gym.  Hyper CrossFIT provided the team atmosphere that she was used to, while introducing her to like-minded friends who helped her stay competitive, and improve her strength, stamina and skill.

As a former Hyper CrossFIT Athlete of the Month herself, Kim is well-known for her overall strength. Whether doing handstands or back flips, Kim relishes that her body is still able to do some of what it did in the past. Although she remains ever committed to pushing herself to get stronger, her proudest moments in the gym are helping others achieve their benchmarks.  Watching other Hyper CrossFitters reach their own personal success such as handstand walks and toes to the bar are on the top of her list, for sure.

Assistant CrossFit Coach, Kim shares this tidbit of advice to anyone interested in trying CrossFIT but struggling with feelings of insecurity or intimidation: “Try it!  Give yourself a chance to prove what you can do.  Being fit is more than a number… unless, of course, that number is on the whiteboard at the end of the WOD.  CrossFIT teaches self confidence and self esteem for EVERYONE!  You will very quickly be impressed with yourself!”

Darren Martin

A Tech Rep from Indianapolis, IN, Darren enjoys traveling with his family, especially cruising. One of his Bucket List items is to take a 30-day cruise around different parts of the world.

In fact, from what we can tell, discovering and exploring new territory is a common thread in Darren’s life adventures. He credits a friend with introducing him to CrossFit.

“This ‘CrossFit’ thing was completely foreign to me. For years I was active in trying out different workout videos off and on in my basement, but with no real personal benefit. I think, for me, I needed the push of a group and gym instead of going to my basement. ”

Little did he know what kind of group he would find. With endless supplies of enthusiasm and encouraging support coming from his fellow CrossFIT buds, Elaine, Dave, Frenchy and Coach Rex, Darren says he found new reasons to get up in the morning.

“I like that it’s such an organized class with a dedicated coach that both directs the movement and supports you to ensure that you are doing the various activities correctly. I wake-up early to attend a 5:30 class several times a week.”

As Woody Allen once said, “80% of success is just showing up.” And show up, Darren does. As with any pursuit in life, consistency is key. Darren is keen on seeing results and sets his goals ambitiously, yet realistically. Even the most challenging of goals don’t seem to daunt him, which is what prompted us to recognize him as September’s CrossFIT Athlete of the Month. Whether seeking to tackle the rope climb or hand stand push-ups, Darren goes after each and every WOD with a resolve to work it until he gets it.

“My hope is that sometime before 2016, I can complete many of the WODs that call for rope climb while also getting over my personal fear of being upside down in a handstand. I need to just pull-up my big boy CrossFit socks and do it.”

His favorite WOD is “The Cindy,” because it consists of movements that he feels confident executing. If given the opportunity to create and name his own WOD, Darren says he would call it “The Old Man” and it would consist of the following:

5 rounds for time:

  • Kettle bell swings
  • Chin-ups
  • Abmat sit-ups
  • Air squats
  • Deadlifts with buy in & out of run or row

As for pointers for newcomers to the sport who may feel hesitant or lacking in confidence, “I’m 50 years young. Before 2013, I had never heard of CrossFit, never played organized sports, and had never been part of a coach directed class. I found myself quickly becoming part of a of group good people. The FIT coaches call you “bro” and are there to completely support you. Add in the fist bumps, high fives, and you’ll find yourself encouraged to just keep moving forward to meet your personal movement and body shape goals.”

FIT Now Enrolling Sports Performance Classes

It is that time of the year again… Back to School! Athletes are beginning their new season in soccer, football, and fall baseball. We know it is a busy time of the year for everyone, and it only gets more exciting now that our regular Sports Performance classes are back!

Mark your schedules: Youth Classes (Fun FIT) will be on Monday and Thursday at 5pm. If you are very interested and are not able to make these dates we may be able to work out another day of the week, if possible. Simply send us an email and we will see what we can work out for you.

Focus and Precise FIT will be held Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm. We know from experience that High School sports will take up most of your time. However, getting into FIT for just one day, whether it be Monday to start the week off strong with a solid workout or Friday to get in a light workout and a good stretch before the games that coming weekend. We recommend that any athletes participating in Football and Soccer should plan to come in once a week to maintain what they have gained in the off-season and to keep up on their flexibility to help prevent injuries.

For athletes that are not in-season, we recommend that you come in to start your new off-season workouts! Again, if these days of the week are not available for you, we will always try to work with you to make it most desirable for you.

TJ Dieterly

A local electrical technician from Columbus, NJ, TJ credits his sister, Courtney, for introducing him to CrossFIT.

“I woke up one day and my sister told me she found a CrossFit gym nearby and that she had signed us both up for a class. She also said that I would be going whether I liked it or not.”

And liked it he did, despite the fact that as an avid outdoorsman, TJ is not often to be found working out in a gym, much less a CrossFit box. It’s far more likely to find TJ seeking out a mountain trail, ski slope, or righteous wave than participating in a WOD. Whether hiking, snowboarding, mountain biking, or surfing, TJ has a passion for defying gravity and braving nature’s elements to produce a great burn.

“I hate being indoors unless I’m watching Game of Thrones.”

It was that fateful first WOD that hooked TJ and caught the attention of his HyperCrossFIT peers. His desire to push himself to his limits and embrace new challenges is precisely what prompted us to recognize him as Augusts’s CrossFIT Athlete of the Month. TJ has achieved several stellar PRs, including both a front and back squat of 300 pounds, which he worked diligently, patiently and consistently to achieve. His favorite WOD is “The Seven,” but if given the opportunity to create and name his own WOD, TJ says he would call it (wait for it) “The TJ” and it would consist of the following:

  • 5 rounds for time
  • Buy-in 800m row
  • 21 floor wipers
  • 15 squat cleans 100/75
  • 9m handstand walk
  • Buy-out 2 rope climbs

As for what he appreciates most about his Hyper CrossFIT family, TJ says, “The other members, the facility and the new Spealer (pull up) bars.” TJ’s advice to anyone interested in CrossFIT, but feeling nervous or intimidated, “It’s not as scary as it looks, and is a lot of fun.”

Taylor Lovejoy

A local high school teacher from Delran, NJ, Taylor credits his wife for introducing him to CrossFIT.

“At first I was a hater, but when I finally stripped away my judgements and learned about CrossFIT I was hooked. I got into Hyper from a GroupOn deal and never saw the inside of a standard gym again.”

Focused less on large goals and achievements and more on little day to day victories, Taylor’s personal approach is to work on getting stronger, faster and more efficient with every workout. “That’s what makes the big moments really count,” he says. That said, his favorite WOD is “Jackie,” which consists of a 1000 meter row, 50 thrusters and 30 pulls ups.

It was that very kind of perseverance, perspective and desire to consistently push himself that caught our attention and inspired us to invite Taylor to be July’s CrossFIT Athlete of the Month. Taylor naturally accepted, saying, “I am totally grateful and honored by this recognition.”

If given the opportunity to create and name his own WOD, Taylor says he would call it, “Killjoy,” and it would consist of the following:

  • 1 mile run
  • 90 Squats
  • 80 Sit Ups
  • 70 Push Ups
  • 60 Barbell Thrusters
  • 50 Calorie Row
  • 40 Alternating Pistols
  • 30 Toe-to-Bar
  • 20 Handstand Push Ups
  • 10 Burpee Box Jumps
  • 1 Muscle Up

As for what he appreciates most about his Hyper CrossFIT family, Taylor says, “Making progress is important, but it is secondary to understanding and valuing each other.” In fact, Taylor’s advice to anyone interested in CrossFIT, but struggling with a general lack of confidence or intimidation is, “Just keep working. Don’t lose heart when you aren’t hitting certain goals of time and weight. We’ve all been in your shoes!”

In his spare time, Taylor enjoys interior home decor/decorating and cooking. “I’m the male Martha Stewart,” he jokes.

Well, Taylor, we certainly hope that all this crossfitting has helped to condition you well for flower arranging and preparing sumptuous cuisine. Invite us over sometime. 😉

Strength Training For Kids – Is it Safe?

Strength training, when done properly, offers many benefits to young athletes and kids who want to look, feel, and perform better in their chosen sport or in life in general. In fact, strength training can help put your child on a lifelong path to better health and fitness.

Don’t confuse strength training with weightlifting, bodybuilding or powerlifting. These activities encourage one to lift heavy weights to build bigger muscles. Weightlifting can put strain on young muscles and tendons that haven’t fully developed or turned to bone yet (growth plates).

For kids, light resistance and controlled movement (under supervision of a Certified Sports Conditioning Coach) is recommended. It’s at this young age that proper form and safety techniques are developed, which carry through to adulthood.

What are some benefits of strength training?

  • When done properly, sports conditioning programs can increase your child’s strength, agility and endurance.
  • Pre and post-season clinics and camps help protect muscles and joints from potential sports-related injuries.
  • Improve your child’s overall performance, help them meet or even exceed “personal best” goals, and advance in skill in their chosen sport.

Even if your child is not interested in sports, strength training can help with the following:

  • Strengthen bones
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle
  • Help maintain a healthy body mass index
  • Improve self-esteem and confidence

Sports Performance training is ideal for children of any age. Since many school-aged children begin playing more competitive sports around second and third grade, most pre-season strength and conditioning camps are well-suited to athletes as young as 8. So long as a child can follow directions and practice good form and technique, they will reap the many realized benefits that year-round conditioning offers.

Although results don’t happen overnight, parent and children alike take fast notice of marked improvements in muscle strength, endurance, mood and confidence, which can help them excel in their sport or just feel more healthy and alive.  Any way you slice it, Sports Performance is a win: win game.

The FREE Youth trial for athletes, ages 8 to 12, will take place this Thursday, 7/2 from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm and the FREE trial for High School Athletes, ages 13 to 18, will be the same day, from 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm. Patrick Nowak


Patrick Nowak is this month’s FIT Sports Performance Athlete of the Month.

A dedicated soccer, baseball and street hockey athlete, Patrick has been training hard with FIT Sports Performance Director, Coach Dan. With a personal goal to climb the rope all the way to the top, Patrick has been steadily increasing his speed and exemplifying a marked improvement in balance and strength. His favorite workout is anything involving running.

In his spare time, Patrick enjoys building with Legos and playing board games.

Patrick’s role model is Clint Dempsey and his life’s aspiration is to become a better soccer player.

Now Accepting Registration for FIT’s 2015 Fall Pre-Season Strength and Conditioning Camp

FIT Sports Performance will be running a six-week Fall Pre-Season Strength & Conditioning Camp in our state-of-the-art facility beginning July 6th, 2015.  This camp is designed for young athletes ages 8 to 18 who wish to develop and improve strength, speed and agility in the forthcoming football and soccer season this Fall.

Classes will be held Mondays through Fridays at various times, based on age and sport, from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Each class is a 1-hour instructional session supervised by a Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach which includes strength training, speed and sports-specific agility drills.

  • What: Sports specific strength training, speed and agility drills
  • Who: Youth athletes, ages 8-18
  • Where: FIT, 11 Cadillac Road, Burlington Township
  • When:
    • July 6th through August 15th
    • Weekdays – Monday through Friday
    • Various 1-hour classes running from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm
    • *Although not exclusive, it is encouraged for kids to attend classes assigned for their age group.
  • Cost: The cost for the full six weeks for each athlete is as follows with appropriate discount based on the number of committed classes per week.  We encourage for parents to sign up 2 kids or more from the same household as there is a an automatic 5% discount for the succeeding kid signed up.

About the Coaches

Dan Cain is a Strength and Conditioning Coach.   He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a biology major at SUNY where he played Division 3 soccer throughout college.   Dan has the experience as an athlete and the scientific knowledge in improving athletic performance of athletes of all ages and levels.
Lawrence Ramiscal, is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist that treats a variety of sports related injuries.  Lawrence is also a USAW Sports Performance Coach and a CrossFit Level 1 Certificate holder qualified to train athletes of all levels in a variety of sports.
